Arguably the most important singer in the history of Jamaican music, Marcia Griffiths made her mark on the Jamaican music scene in the late sixties with a series of popular singles before achieving international fame in 1970 alongside her longtime friend and occasional collaborator Bob Andy.

Bob & Marcia's upbeat reggae version of Nina Simone's inspirational song "(To Be) Young, Gifted & Black" hit #5 on the British pop charts. The single was the first of two British chart toppers, and her exuberant rendition of "Pied Piper" narrowly missed a Top 10 placement the following year. Soon after, Marcia became a member of Bob Marley's famous backing group, the I-Threes, while she continued to enjoy success as a solo artist throughout the rest of the 1970s and well beyond, with numerous Jamaican hits for a variety of producers.

The best of her solo repertoire can be heard on this "Essential Artist" compilation, the latest release in Trojan Records' new series showcasing the work of Jamaica's most popular "foundation" artists. It's a collection that illustrates why Marcia Griffiths is now a Jamaican legend.
